Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon: looks dingy
October 22, 2007

I installed Gutsy Gibbon this weekend and ran into some troubling frustrations.
I’ve since reverted to Feisty Fawn due to an overall disappointment with the 7.10 release. (I just didn’t see that many improvements – though I will upgrade (probably around semester break)).
Overall initial impression: Gutsy Gibbon looked dingy. I took a screen shot of my desktop right after I installed GG, (NOT the image above) I lost my screen shot after reverting to Feisty Fawn…
The default desktop image that loaded with GG on my computer was horrible. It was the washed out sandy gray-tan version of the image above. Ubuntu is obviously jumping on the “let’s copy Apple” bandwagon with their swish swash elegant background images – but they seriously need to realize that not everyone lives in a desert – and not everyone will react favorably to those clammy monochromatic pallets.
Maybe they could have the background set based on the geographic location…?
Anyway, I thought my monitor had died. The color scheme was dead and depressing (and if lifeless is different from dead – it was lifeless as well) and felt like my computer was breathing its last breath.
I’d say that extends to the overall look of the icons and windows theme, but the desktop was by far the worst looking thing I’ve seen since the low res windows XP green hill (a lame rip off of the really cool movie Toys –why can’t I find a decent image of the green hill from that film ?!?!)

Oh yeah — I agree with you. I’m not saying that for me the look of it killed my experience or hurt the likelihood that I’m going to want to be a user ….
but image *is* important and the Ubuntu creators need to create the look of their OS with that *partly* in mind. it should look like the OS is just kicking a55 right out of the box.
if only I hadn’t lost the actual screen shot from my install (I’ll post it when I get back to it soon)… but the desktop image along with the other UI skins gave the impression that there was something wrong with my video card.
like I said, it just looked dead and un-calibrated.
that was my only point.
